What to always include in your captions

But to turn your captions into compelling narratives that engage your audience, there are three key elements you should always include: a strong hook, strategic use of keywords, and a clear call to action (CTA). Let’s break these down:

A strong hook - The first line of your caption is crucial—it's what catches the eye of the reader to read on. Start with something that immediately grabs attention, like a question, a bold statement, a statistic or a relatable insight. For example, “I’ve been in the skincare industry for X years and I can’t believe…” piques interest and prompts readers to continue.

Keywords - Incorporating relevant keywords into your captions does wonders for your visibility. Think about terms your ideal client would search for—whether it's "acne solutions," or"hydrating facials,"—and weave these naturally into your caption. This not only boosts your SEO but ensures your content reaches the right audience.

Call to action (CTA) - Every caption should have a purpose, telling your audience what to do next. Whether you’re encouraging them to book an appointment, tag a friend, or share their thoughts, a CTA is the best way to increase engagement. Being specific and direct, such as "Comment BOOK below for booking link", can effectively get your audience to take action.

Should you use hashtags in your captions?

The hashtag debate remains a popular one. So, to clear it up, estheticians, you should be using hashtags! They remain a pivotal tool for expanding your reach and connecting with both existing and potential clients.

Hashtags help to direct Instagram users to content that resonates with their interests. By strategically using hashtags, you enable your posts to be discovered by those searching for acne solutions, skincare advice, or esthetic services. This not only boosts the visibility but also attracts followers who are genuinely interested in your offerings.

But using any old hashtags won’t cut it. The effectiveness of hashtags hinges on their relevance. Incorporate tags that only relate to your post's content, such as #acnetreatment, along with broader skincare hashtags and location-based tags (e.g., #NYCesthetician) to reach a wider audience. 

However, Instagram only recommends using 3-5 hashtags (and is currently testing a tag limit of 5) so choose wisely.

Put yourself in the shoes of your ideal client and think about what they might be searching for. This will help your content surface when potential clients search these terms, increasing your reach. With this in mind, avoid using medical terminology or phrases not commonly used by the wider public, as these are not terms they will be searching for. 

Engagement is king on Instagram, and your captions are where engagement begins. Captions that encourage interactions (comments, shares, and saves) can increase your content’s visibility. Asking questions, inviting discussion, or telling users to tag friends will not only boost your engagement but also signal to Instagram your content is valuable, thereby increasing its discoverability. Use Instagram’s interactive tools, such as caption polls to make it even easier to connect with your audience.
